The Squid Game Cookie: How to make Korean Dalgona Candy

Dalgona Candy also known as Korean Honeycomb Toffee or Ppopgi is the candy in Squid Game that has become the latest challenge on the internet!

The Squid Game Dalgona Candy was created during the Korean war when ingredients were scarce. It was a popular street snack in Korea in the ’70s and ’80s. It is still sold and eaten in South Korea as ‘retro’ candy. There was also a game associated with it that the kids played. Ppopgi is actually the name of the game. The challenge was to remove the inner shape, without breaking it, the first to do it, would win a free Dalgona. The shape in the centre is usually a circle, star, triangle or umbrella.

What is Dalgona?

You might associate Dalgona with the very popular Dalgona Whipped Coffee that went viral on TikTok last year —  and you wouldn’t be wrong. The term itself refers to honeycomb toffee candy. Although it’s purely made with sugar, baking soda adds a unique texture to the candy. Unlike praline which hardens as it cools, the Dalgona is a sponge-like toffee that can be easily chewed. The word dalgona came from the casual Korean word “dalguna” meaning “it’s sweet.”

What is Dalgona Game?

Dalgona candy is making a comeback thanks to the Korean Netflix show Squid Game. In this series, a group of people (all of whom are in debt) participate in a series of 6 games. We also see the well known ‘Red Light Green Light’ game in the show! The big advantage of winning is becoming rich, but the big disadvantage of losing is that you will die. In the show you can see players trying to carve out intricate shapes from toffee candy, without breaking.

Would you survive the Squid Game cookie challenge? Or are you intrigued by the Korean honeycomb toffee that everyone suddenly wants to make?

Squid Game Dalgona Cookie certainly is fun and competitive to make at home and play with.
